Cascara Sagrada

Called "Sacred Bark" by the Indians

Cascara Sagrada is famous for its effectiveness with chronic constipation and it is said to not be habit forming. According to Louise Tenney, it increases the secretions of the stomach, liver and pancreas. She says that it has also been "effective to the gall ducts in helping the body rid itself of gallstones" and that "it helps in painless evacuations. After extended usage, the bowels will function naturally and regularly from its tonic effects."

Velma Keith's reference says that "it is a laxative that is safe to use during pregnancy and can be used for children." She quotes the following case history: "W hen W. or her children started to become ill, she found that giving Cascara before bed helped toxins start moving out through the colon and body cleansing began the next day. Often this was enough to prevent the illness."
