Hawthorn Berries

Heart, Weight Loss

Hawthorn has become known as the "heart herb" and has been used medicinally for the heart since the 1 600s. According to Velma Keith's book, it strengthens and regulates the heart. She states that it has been used extensively in well- known European heart remedies.

Hawthorn is now known to contain choline, which is said to break down cholesterol in the bloodstream from large fatty clumps that can block veins and arteries, into tiny particles that can be utilized by the body tissues (emulsifies fat). Autopsied victims of fatal heart attacks are usually found with fat in their veins and arteries.

A case history or anecdote related by Velma Keith is as follows: "An X-ray taken by a doctor showed that J's heart was enlarged and overlapping the lung. It was also very sore. She drank 1 cup of Hawthorn tea regularly each day until the problem was corrected."

For those who are trying to lose weight, you may want to include Hawthorn in your program, in view of what we have already discussed regarding Hawthorn's capability of emulsifying fat. According to one authority, Hawthorn has an effect on energy levels and on the body's ability to burn up calories quickly by boosting metabolism.

Hawthorn berries are widely used to strengthen and balance the heart and circulatory system. Bioflavonoids cause dilation of blood vessels, especially coronary arteries. They produce a feeling of well-being by reducing blood pressure and cholesterol.

This is a plant that truly seems to target the tissues of the heart. Researchers believe that hawthorn helps the heart in several ways. It dilates coronary arteries to improve blood supply. It may increase the heart's pumping force, eliminate heart-rhythm irregularities and remove cholesterol from arterial walls.

It has been used to reduce angina attacks (with long-term use) and prevent cardiac complications in elderly patients with pneumonia and influenza. Even though hawthorn is safe, you should discuss adding hawthorn to your treatment with your physician.

In 1996 the extract was improved by replacing alcohol with glycerine and adding natural blackberry flavor.
