Relaxant, Expectorant
As a relaxant, Lobelia has the reputation of being a very strong antispasmodic that works quickly to overcome an epileptic seizure or asthma attack, menstrual cramps ("charley horse") in the calf or foot, or even heart palpitations. In its liquid form, it can reach the bloodstream rapidly, by placing half-a-dropperful under the tongue. For muscle cramps, it can even be rubbed right into the area along with some Tei Fu Oil to drive it down into the muscle. This combination is also great for a stiff or sore neck. Lobelia is classified as nervine. In other words, it relaxes and relieves pain in any tense, contracted part of the body, including the uterus and respiratory tract. It works very well when combined with other herbs. In fact, it has been said to be a catalyst or thinking herb. As an expectorant, it has aided in clearing mucus from the passageways in the lungs and bronchial tubes, faster than any other herb. This property makes it valuable when coping with an asthma attack. Velma Keith notes this: "Small amounts of Lobelia act as a relaxant and large doses act as an emetic." (An emetic makes you vomit!) Lobelia is offered as part of our single herb line and as a liquid essence. The essence can be used more conveniently in baths, poultices or other external preparations.
