Vitamin C

Infections, Antioxidant, Builds Immune Response, Colds, Fevers

A natural source tablet or powder containing bioflavinoids is the easiest to assimilate and best utilized by the body. Timed release is not recommended for pregnancy.

It is important in the formation of collagen, gums, blood vessels, bones and teeth, and the absorption of iron. Vitamin C is rapidly depleted under stress. Smokers need an extra 25 mg. of Vitamin C per cigarette smoked each day. Healing can be sped up by having adequate amounts of this vitamin.

Studies indicate vitamin C can reduce the total length of labor, reduce the frequency and severity of perineal tearing, reduce the incidence of stretch marks, and reduce the possibility of infections in mom and baby.

500 mg. of Vitamin C per day is recommended for every month of pregnancy up to the bowel tolerance, i.e., at two months gestation a pregnant woman should take 1000 mg, at three months 1500 mg. Increase the amount to bowel tolerance but make sure to split the total amount consumed into two or more doses.

(Remember that any time one takes a high concentration of vitamin C, one must wean off it gradually.)
