Spotlight on Herbs:  Pau d'Arco

Pau d’arco trees are native to the rain forests of South America and are known to repel fungal growth. Native tribes of South America profess that pau d’arco tea, made by boiling the bark in water, consumed three times a day, can cure tumors. The tea is also used to purify the blood, increase urine flow, reduce fevers such as malaria, and treat dysentery, rheumatism and ulcers. Natives use pau d’arco topically for a variety of skin diseases, including eczema, fungal infections, hemorrhoids, psoriasis, skin cancers, snakebites, and wounds.

Medical doctors in Brazil recommend drinking pau d’arco tea for its antifungal properties against ringworm, systemic Candida albicans yeast infections, and other intestinal parasite infestations. Pau d’arco has also been used by numerous physicians in Brazil in the treatment of cancer. According to research published in Planta Medica and the Journal of Natural Products, pau d’arco’s anti-cancer activity may be due to the presence of cytoxic napthoquinones—compounds which demonstrate a toxic effect on certain cells. Unlike conventional cancer therapy, pau d’arco is known to cause no adverse side effects such as hair loss, pain or immune disfunction. Even the FDA acknowledges the herb’s safety and has given pau d’arco “a clean bill of health.”

Scientific research shows pau d’arco stimulates the production of red blood cells in bone marrow. Research also confirms pau d’arco is strongly anti-inflammatory, relieving the pain of arthritis, cystitis, inflammation of the cervix, and prostatitis. Pau d’arco even possesses antimicrobial, anti-tumor, and antiviral activity, being particularly effective against viral infections of the mouth, nose, and throat, and is widely used throughout the world as an antioxidant and general preventative treatment for cancer. More specifically, pau d’arco is heralded for use in cases of candidiasis, chlamydia, chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), Crohn’s disease, leukemia, lupus (discoid and systemic), and Raynaud’s disease.

The inner bark of pau d’arco is rich in lapachol, an immuno-stimulant compound having antibiotic and anti-tumor properties. Lapachol prevents tumor growth by inhibiting oxygen metabolism by tumor cells. Recent research shows lapachol to be active against lymphocytic leukemia in mice. Researchers at the Naval Medical Research Institute in Bethesda, Maryland also found lapachol to exhibit a protective action against the penetration and infection of a deadly parasite known as Schistosoma mansoni, which can be transmitted to humans through contact with fresh water contaminated by human feces.

Pau d’arco demonstrates the ability to reduce blood pressure and counteract the effects of diabetes, partially due to the presence of an alkaloid called tecomine.

Pau D’Arco Extract is formulated in a purified water and alcohol base to facilitate quicker absorption.

My name is Mara Bramante. I live in Italy. I would like to thank both Brenda and Chris for all the assistance they gave me before and after receiving my SD8004 Super Digital Iridology Camera. The camera takes such clear precise pictures, and above all, it is really easy to use. I have recommended the same SD8004 to 3 Italian colleagues, and I am proud to say that they are just as satisfied as I am.
