Higher Vitamin D Levels Associated with Lower Risk of Cancer and Cancer Mortality

11/6/2025

A systematic review of medical journal articles affirmed a strong association between higher serum vitamin D levels and a lower risk of bladder, breast, colon, endometrial, esophageal, gallbladder, kidney, ovarian, pancreatic, rectal, stomach and vulvar cancers, as well as Hodgkin’s and non-Hodgkin’s lymphomas. The review also uncovered lower risks of metastasis and mortality from cancer in association with higher levels of vitamin D. Author Sunil J. Wimalawansa, MD, of the Cardio Metabolic and Endocrine Institute in North Brunswick, New Jersey, concluded that while a 25-hydroxyvitamin D level of 20 nanograms per milliliter (ng/mL) is sufficient for the health of bone and muscle, levels greater than 40 ng/mL significantly reduced cancer risk and mortality, and more than 50 ng/mL is associated with even greater protection.

Wimalawansa suggested that negative results of studies that used less than 5,000 IU vitamin D per day or those that evaluated a serum level of less than 40 ng/mL should be interpreted with caution since these amounts and levels are less than optimal for cancer risk reduction. “While many observational studies support vitamin D’s protective role in incidents and deaths from cancer, some recent mega-randomized, controlled trials have failed to demonstrate this,” he noted. “The latter is primarily due to critical study design flaws, like recruiting vitamin D-sufficient subjects, inadequate dosing, short durations, and biased designs…Consequently, conclusions from these cannot be relied upon.”

He concluded that vitamin D exerts system-wide beneficial effects beyond bone health and significantly affects immune regulation, gene expression and disease prevention through several mechanisms. The current review affirmed the importance of maintaining optimal serum vitamin D concentrations of 40 or 50–80 ng/mL to fully realize these beneficial effects. Dr. Wimalawansa suggested 5,000 IU as a sufficient daily dose of the vitamin.

The systematic review cited 416 articles, including those that reported findings from observational studies, epidemiological investigations, randomized trials, and mechanistic or hypothesis-generating studies relevant to the analysis of the association between vitamin D and cancer. The article was published July 16, 2025, in the journal Nutrients.

Apply What You've Learned: Vitamin D and Cancer
Research has revealed a number of mechanisms for vitamin D against cancer. Vitamin D helps prevent cancer cell growth, promotes cancer cell death, blocks the formation of blood vessels that deliver nutrients to cancer and reduces metastasis.

In addition to increasing the risk of cancer, vitamin D insufficiency and deficiency are also associated with negative effects associated with the disease, including infection, pain, depression and diminished quality of life.

While exposure to ultraviolet rays increases vitamin D in the body, the American Academy of Dermatology recommends against obtaining vitamin D from sunlight, sun lamps or tanning beds due to the increased risk of skin cancers associated with these methods.

Vitamin D is present in foods such as fatty fish, egg yolks, mushrooms, fortified dairy products and other fortified foods. Vitamin D can also be added to the diet in the form of vitamin D2 or D3. Regular blood testing for serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels can help determine whether the amount of vitamin D we consume is sufficient to obtain optimal levels.

Are you Taking Vitamin D?
If you're not taking Vitamin D, you can order from us at this link or pick it up in our office:
joyfullivingservices.com/life-extension.html

Check your blood test results.  Most doctors don't check for Vitamin D during the normal annual exam.  Ask your doctor to check your Vitamin D level and make sure it's up at 70.  Most people are low and down in the 30's.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Natural Immunization - What you can do

9/15/2025

Picture
This morning I went to the store to buy food for the office for the week and I saw "free flu and COV*D shots" signs all over the place.  Seeing this makes me wonder how many people just get the shots because they are free and they don't think about the consequences to those shots or even if there's another way to immunize your body naturally.

You don't have to get shots to keep your body healthy during the fall and winter.  You can use natural herbs and homeopathy to help your body stay strong during the changing weather and cold days.

Here are some ideas:

1.  Influenseg - This is a Homeopathic medicine for the minor relief of headache, body heat, lethargy, fatigue and congestion.  This is great to have on hand when you start getting that feeling in the back of your throat or in your head that you might be getting sick.  It helps with colds and flu.

2.  Echinacea - This herb has been known to help boost the immune system and help with colds.  Great to prevent getting sick especially if you've been out in the public and around crowds.  Great with vitamin C.

3.  Pau d'Arco - This herb has been known to help with viruses and colds and also helps to boost the immune system.  It's been known to help with candida yeast infections as well.

4.  VS-C Combination - This combination has been used for viruses by Nature's Sunshine and is good to have handy for the winter.

5.  Vitamin C - This vitamin is good to have around to help with your immune system as a preventative and if you get a cold.

6.  Olive Leaf - This one we've used for COV*D along with the VS-C, Vitamin C and D, Zinc.

7.  Bronchial Formula - This is by Nature's Sunshine and is used exactly what it says it's for.  It's been used for bronchitis, pnemonia, allergies, and hayfever.  It's is known to help open up the bronchials to help eliminate mucous and open the air passages.

8.  N-Acetyle Cysteine (NAC) - Has been known to help improve the lungs after COV*D and pnemonia or bronchitis.  It's known as an antioxidant for liver detoxification and eye health as well.

9.  Vitamin D & K - Unfortunately we work indoors a lot and because of that, most of us are deficient in vitamins D&K.  Life Extension has a great Vitamin D&K supplement.  These vitamins are known to help with immunity and also keeping our bones strong.  Most people are deficient even if the lab results say you're in range.  If your range is in the 30's, you are deficient and should increase the Vitamin D up into the 70's.

10.  Zinc - This is known to also help with colds and sore throats.  It's great as a preventative as well.

The next time you see a sign to go in and get a free vaccine, think about how your body is perfectly capable of staying healthy on it's own and keep a few of the above supplements around to help it out.

Greater Antioxidant Intake Associated with Lower Risk of Premature Mortality from Cardiovascular Disease

6/5/2025

Picture
A study found that men and women with cardiovascular disease who consumed a higher amount of antioxidant vitamins and minerals had a lower risk of mortality during follow-up compared with those who consumed low amounts.

The study included 1,395 participants in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2001-2010) who had cardiovascular disease, which included coronary heart disease, congestive heart failure, heart attack, stroke or angina at the beginning of the study. Dietary recall interview responses were analyzed for the intake of vitamins A, C and E, carotenoids, selenium and zinc, and composite dietary antioxidant indexes (CDAI) were calculated. Authors Xintao Hu and colleagues explained that CDAI “takes into account the contribution of various antioxidants to the body’s antioxidant capacity.”

Six hundred eighty-two deaths occurred through 2019. Having an intake of vitamin C that was among the highest one-third of individuals in the study was associated with an adjusted 27% lower risk of death from all causes during follow-up in comparison with the risk associated with vitamin C intake that was among the lowest third. For vitamin E, those whose intake was among the top third had a 32% lower risk of mortality compared with the lowest third. Carotenoids were also protective, with an adjusted 22% lower risk of mortality experienced by individuals whose intake was among the highest. When composite dietary antioxidant index was evaluated, men and women among the top third had a 38% lower risk of mortality during follow-up.

Evaluation of the effects of antioxidants on the risk of dying from cardiovascular disease revealed that high intake of vitamin E and zinc was associated with respective 41% and 36% lower risks, and a high CDAI was associated with a 42% lower risk.

“Higher levels of dietary antioxidants are associated with a reduced risk of both all-cause and cardiovascular-cause mortality in patients with cardiovascular disease,” the authors concluded. “These findings suggest that increasing antioxidant intake may serve as a potential strategy for improving outcomes in this population.”

The study was reported April 9, 2025, in BMC Public Health.1

I am now carrying the Life Extension products in my office.

If you are not on a methylated multi vitamin, please contact me so we can discuss the best route for you to take.  I'm available in person in my office in Auburn, over the phone, and via zoom.

Iridology and Colon Cleansing

4/7/2025

Picture
Look at your irises.  Do you have yellow, orange, brown or white pigments near your pupil?  This is an indication that you may need to improve your digestion and do some colon cleansing.

Thursday was the 1st day of Autumn/Fall.  We usually suggest body and colon cleansing in the Spring and Fall.

Colon Cleansing
Retained debris in the colon leads to the absorption of toxins, resulting in systemic intoxication (poisoning).  Symptoms of this condition can include mental confusion, depression, irritability, fatigue, gastrointestinal irregularities, and even allergic reactions such as hives, sneezing, and coughing.

Many nutritionists and researchers believe that this toxicity can eventually lead to more serious disorders.  Colon cleansing can rid the colon of debris, and help prevent and treat a variety of health problems.

Below I've included information on 4 types of colon, parasite, blood, and body cleansing.  These have helped hundreds of people to detox successfully.

  1. Nature's Sunshine CleanStart
  2. Nature's Sunshine ParaCleanse
  3. Nature's Sunshine Tiao He Cleanse
  4. Ivy Bridge's Colon Cleanse

We suggest starting with CleanStart for the first month, Tiao He Cleanse the second month, and ParaCleanse the third month.  It will take two boxes of each cleanse to last an entire month.

Ivy Bridge's Colon Cleanse is a gentle alternative if you wish to focus on one cleanse for the entire three months.

Cranberry Powder Decreases the Incidence of Urinary Tract Infection Among Women with Recurrent UTIs

4/2/2025

Picture
A clinical trial that included women with a history of urinary tract infections (UTIs) resulted in a 52% lower risk of UTI during a six-month period among women who received cranberry capsules in comparison with a placebo. Additionally, cranberry lowered the incidence of urinary tract infection caused by Escherichia coli (E. coli) bacteria by 51%, decreased the incidence of UTI with urinary urgency and frequency by 71%, delayed the time to the first urinary tract infection by 64% and lowered the average number of UTIs per participant by 59% compared with the placebo.

The authors explained that proanthocyanidins and flavonoids in cranberry have been shown to reduce the adhesiveness of harmful E. coli bacteria within the urinary tract, which helps protect against infection. They concluded that whole cranberry powder capsules “reduce the incidence of culture-confirmed UTI and several other UTI-related outcomes in healthy females with recurrent UTI history.”

The randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial included 145 women between the ages of 18 and 65 years who had at least three UTIs within the year prior to enrollment, or at least two but no more than five UTIs during the previous six months. The participants, who were free of UTI at the beginning of the study, were given capsules that contained 500 milligrams of whole cranberry powder or a placebo for six months. To confirm the incidence of UTI, urine cultures were conducted at the beginning of the study and at three- and six-month clinic visits, as well as when participants reported experiencing UTI symptoms.

The findings were reported January 23, 2025, in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

Apply What You've Learned: Urinary Tract Infection
Urinary tract infection will be experienced by about 60% of all women during their lifetimes. Men also get UTIs, but they are at lower risk. Although UTIs are treatable with antibiotic drugs, the need for effective preventive measures is significant.

Routine urinalysis may test for an enzyme called leukocyte esterase, which is produced by white blood cells. Leukocyte esterase is a screening test for white blood cells in the urine. When urine is positive for leukocyte esterase, it should then be examined for white blood cells. Although normal urine may have a small number of white blood cells, a high number suggests infection. A urine culture can then be ordered to determine the type of infectious agent present in the urine.

Like cranberries, blueberries contain compounds that help prevent E. coli bacteria from adhering to the lining of the urinary tract. Blueberries can be consumed whole, juiced or in the form of an extract.

Probiotics, particularly those in the Lactobacillus family, contribute to a healthy microflora that may help prevent an imbalance of undesirable bacteria that cause urinary tract infection.

Vitamin C Liposome for Immuno-Modulation, Allergies, Degenerative Conditions, Ephinephrine/Dopamine Regulation, and Neuronal Antioxidant (Stroke, TBI, Memory)

9/17/2024

Picture
Areas of Research
Immuno-Modulation
Allergies
Degenerative Conditions
Epinephrine/Dopamine Regulation
Neuronal Antioxidant (Stroke, TBI, Memory)

Vitamin C and Liposomal Technology Vitamin C has multiple beneficial physiological effects. These include antioxidant properties, synthesis of catecholamines, formation of collagen, facilitation of iron absorption, and support with the processing of many hormones, enzymes, and amino acids. In a recent clinical study, it was demonstrated that oral delivery of Liposomal Vitamin C produced circulating concentrations of vitamin C greater than those elicited by oral delivery of Non-Liposomal Vitamin C and has the added ability to cross through the Blood Brain Barrier. [1] [2]

Immuno-Modulation Vitamin C affects various aspects of the immune process. Its high concentration in leukocytes, its rapid utilization during infection, and its depression in clinical situations associated with reduced immunologic function have suggested a role for the vitamin in the immune response. There is evidence that Vitamin C is involved in several neutrophil functions, including chemotactic responses, phagocytosis, hexose monophosphate shunt activity, myeloperoxidase function, and cyclic GMP levels. [3]

Degenerative Conditions Research suggests that high-dose vitamin C kills degenerative cells. New studies show some degenerative cells with low levels of catalase enzyme activity are much less capable of removing hydrogen peroxide formed by vitamin C, than normal cells, and are more susceptible to damage and death when they are exposed to high doses of vitamin C. [4]

Norepinephrine/Dopamine Regulation Vitamin C functions as a neuromodulator for dopamine and norepinephrine. A deficiency of Vitamin C is associated with significant increases in dopamine levels and similar relative decreases in norepinephrine because normal amounts of dopamine could not be metabolized into norepinephrine. Liposomal Vitamin C is capable of crossing the blood-brain barrier to regulate dopamine and nor-epinephrine levels. [5]

Neuronal antioxidant support Studies show Vitamin C is a vital antioxidant. Vitamin c has shown promise in its high antioxidant role against ischemic stroke, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and Huntingdon's disease. [5]

Stroke Several studies found that a low vitamin C status in humans is associated with increased mortality rates from stroke, and plasma Vitamin C concentrations are decreased in stroke and critically ill patients. This data on antioxidant depletion suggests that there is significant oxidative stress associated with brain injury. [6]

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Oxidative stress is linked with many psychiatric conditions including PTSD. Vitamin C has successfully attenuated memory impairment and all changes observed in oxidative stress markers induced by PTSD. [7]

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) TBI is an acquired brain injury that occurs when there is sudden trauma that leads to brain damage. There is evidence that a secondary injury from TBI is specifically related to oxidative stress. By incorporating antioxidant support with Vitamin C, clinicians can help attenuate oxidative posttraumatic brain damage and optimize patients' recovery. [8]

Memory In a recent study vitamin C administration successfully attenuated memory impairment and all of the changes observed in oxidative stress markers. Oxidative stress is associated with neuronal damage in many brain regions including the hippocampus; an area in the brain responsible for memory processing. [7]

Do You Suffer From Seasonal Allergies?

4/5/2024

Seasonal Allergy
(formerly ALJ VegiTabs®)

Think you can get by without respiratory support? Don’t hold your breath. There’s a lot more than oxygen in the air you breathe, and not all of it is not good. Breathe easier and manage the changing seasons by supporting your respiratory system.

Breathing is life. Herbs like fenugreek, horseradish, mullein and fennel support healthy breathing.

Provides relief from airborne irritants

Soothes and supports sinuses during seasonal changes

HOW IT WORKS

Airborne particles are everywhere. When particles enter the respiratory system via the nose or the mouth, the body turns on its cleansing mechanisms, and the immune system is put on active duty. Herbal nourishment supports a healthy respiratory system that can be challenged by inhaled irritants. The herbal formula ALJ helps balance the natural eliminative functions of the respiratory system. It supports healthy lung function and helps support the body during seasonal changes. Fenugreek and mullein contain mucilage, a substance that causes the herbs to swell in water. This creates a viscous, fibrous substance that provides a soothing effect. Fennel has traditionally been used as a cleansing herb and is often used after eating. Indians used boneset during seasonal times when the body needed extra nutritional support. Horseradish has a stimulating effect on the respiratory system, which you can easily discover for yourself by eating a small amount of the freshly grated herb.

WHY OUR SEASONAL ALLERGY FORMULA?
Developed in partnership with a genuine American herbalist, Jeanne Burgess, Seasonal Allergy (long called ALJ) has been a top-selling product for years. Each ingredient in this formula provides unique support. Great care goes into the planting and harvesting of our ingredients. For instance, fenugreek seed thrives in northern India where local farmers hand-sow the crop after the monsoon season. Then they carefully irrigate four times during the 110-day growth cycle. Plants are hand-cut then threshed to separate the seeds, which dry in the sun.

THE STORY BEHIND SEASONAL ALLERGY (FORMERLY ALJ VEGITABS®)
The Greeks and Romans fed fenugreek to their cattle (part of its Latin name, foenum graecum, means Greek hay). The Egyptians used it for embalming. Horseradish goes back more than 3,000 years. The Greeks and Romans applied it to muscle aches and cramps. They also consumed it for help with coughs. In folklore medicines, poultices of this herb have been employed to ease gout and sciatica, and even in attempts to remove freckles! Mullein, aka Adam’s Flannel, Beggar’s blanket and torch weed, contains mucilage, gum, saponins, flavonoids and other beneficial compounds. According to the European Union Monograph, its traditional use is in relieving sore throat linked to dry cough and cold. Seasonal Allergy formula…only from Nature’s Sunshine.

RECOMMENDED USE
Take 2–4 capsules/tablets with a meal three times daily.

"Your website is responsible for MANY hiatal hernia referrals for me, so thank you! I even had one come from TUCSON, ARIZONA to stay by my office in NEW YORK for a week with great success. I get about one referral per month from you and they have worked out GREAT so thank you again."  Dr. Foster Malmed

My name is Mara Bramante. I live in Italy. I would like to thank both Brenda and Chris for all the assistance they gave me before and after receiving my SD8004 Super Digital Iridology Camera. The camera takes such clear precise pictures, and above all, it is really easy to use. I have recommended the same SD8004 to 3 Italian colleagues, and I am proud to say that they are just as satisfied as I am.
